Capitals upset defending champion Bruins to advance to 2nd round
Joel Ward slammed home a rebound in overtime to send the Washington Capitals into the second round of the playoffs dashing the hopes of the defending Stanley Cup champions Boston Bruins for a repeat.
The Capitals won on a 2-1 Game 7 upset of the Bruins on Wednesday night. This was the first time in NHL history that a playoff series went down the line and be decided by one goal.
Rookie Braden Holtby of the Capitals deflected 31 while Matt Hendricks contributed to the other goal of Washington. The barely made it to the playoffs this season after finishing on top of the Eastern Conference in the last two seasons.
Tim Thomas of the Bruins made 26 saves while Tyler Sequin scored the only goal for Boston. The Bruins were hoping to be the first team since ’97-’98 to repeat as Stanley Cup champions. The last team to do that was the Detroit Red Wings.
Boston takes playoff opener in OT
The Boston Bruins banked on Chris Kelly’s long slapshot goal 1:18 into overtime as the defending Stanley Cup champions took the playoff opener against the Washington Capitals at the TD Garden on Thursday night.
The Bruins’ goalie, Tim Thomas, earned his sixth career playoff shutout by stopping all 17 shots thrown his way for the night. But his opponent did equally as well. Braden Holtby, a third-stringer on his playoff debu, made 29 saves for the Capitals before Chris Kelly took his shot that whizzed over his glove for the game-winner.
The 21-year old Holtby who just has played just 21 games in his NHL career, made it to the lineup because of injuries to Tomas Vokoun and Michal Neuvirth.
Chris Kelly had career highs of 20 goals and 39 points with a 33 plus-minus tied for third in the league.
Game 2 is set on Saturday also at the TD Garden
