New York Rangers Highlights

Capitals force Game 7

When it comes to the playoffs, everything just seem to go topsy-turvy.

The Washington Capitals defeated the top-seeded New York Rangers on Wednesday night to send the semifinals into a deciding Game 7 on Saturday.

After a heartbreaking setback in Game 5 of the series, the Capitals bounced back with a vengeance against the Rangers, winning 2-1 to force a winner-take-all deciding Game 7 when lesser teams would have just folded and dropped the game.

Two-time MVP Alex Ovechkin and playoff rookie Braden Holtby all stepped up to prevent the Rangers from winning the series and take this game down the line. Jason Chimera scored in the second to take a 2-0 lead, their second two-goal lead in the series.

The Capitals are the No. 1 in blocked shots in this playoffs while the Rangers come in second. Washington edged New York  24-6 in blocks during Game 6.

The deciding game is on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. The winner will take on the New Jersey Devils in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Rangers outlast Capitals in 3OT

The New York Rangers relied on Marian Gaborik’s first goal in the playoffs to beat the Washington Capitals in the early hours of Thursday morning to take a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

It took the Rangers three overtime periods before Gaborik finally put an end to the night 14:41 into the third overtime on a pass from Brad Richards which he sent sliding between rookie goaltender Braden Holtby to win the game for New York 2-1.

Hotlby had 47 saves for the Capitals while Henrik Lundqvist stopped 45 for the Rangers.

The suspense was kept high by Washington early in the third overtime as they killed a power play by New York. The game started 7:40pm on Wednesday and finished 12:14am on Thursday morning.

John Carlson scored in the second period for the Capitals while Ryan Callahan scored for the Rangers also in the second period.

Game 4 is on Saturday in Washington.

Rangers force do-or-die against Senators

The New York Rangers refused to bow out in the first round of the playoffs just yet as they sent the series against the Ottawa Senators back to Madison Square Garden for a do-or-die match.

This wasn’t what the top-seeded Rangers had in mind though. Brad Richards took the go-ahead goal while Derek Stepan got a goal and two assists as New York beat Ottawa 3-2 on Monday night to give the Rangers another shot at advancing to the second round of the playoffs.

This is the first time in 17 years that the Madison Square Garden will be hosting a Game 7 in any sport.

Even the return of Daniel Alfredsson after missing three games due to a concussion failed to rally the Senators in completing the upset.

Game 7s are known to be emotionally charged as both teams are fighting their last chance to move to the next round. Catch Game 7 at the Madison Square Garden in New York on Thursday night.
