Philadelphia Flyers Highlights
Devils defeat Flyers for East finals spot
Martin Brodeur made 27 saves for the New Jersey Devils to help them overcome the Philadelphia Flyers and move on to the Eastern Conference Finals of the NHL. This is the first finals appearance for the Devils since ’03.
Three different Devils scored goals to defeat the Flyers 3-1 in Game 5 on Tuesday night, Bryce Salvador, David Clarkson, and Ilya Kovalchuk played great games sending the Devils into the conference championships for the first time since 2003. They will face either the New York Rangers or the Washington Capitals.
The Devils came to the playoffs with the sixth seed and lost the first game to the Flyers before winning four straight to demolish their opponents and go on to play in the conference finals. They are the first East team to win four straight in the playoffs.
This is the second straight season that the Flyers were eliminated in the semifinals.
Flyers take Game 1 against Devils
Danny Briere’s goal in overtime Sunday night lifted the Philadelphia Flyers over the New Jersey Devils in the opening game of the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Briere scored the winning goal 4:36 into overtime to win over the Devils 4-3. This was just minutes after his first goal was overturned because a review found that he kicked the puck into the net.
The Flyers came from a week of rest after defeating Pittsburgh in Game 6 last Sunday. Meanwhile, the Devils come into the semifinals tired after playing their third consecutive overtime game. They came from a 7-game series against Florida to make it into the semis.
Coming off the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference, the Flyers won 3 straight games against the Penguins in the first round to eliminate them in 6 games. The Devils were the No. 6 seed and wanted to prove that they could get into the second round.
Game 2 is on Tuesday.
The Philadelphia Flyers play in Atlantic Division under the Eastern Conference. This has been a historically difficult division to play in with the likes of powerhouse hockey teams such as the Pittsburgh Penguins and the New Jersey Devils. Other notable teams in the Atlantic division include both New York teams with the Islanders and the Rangers.
Traditionally, the Flyers have hotly contested affairs with their division rival the New York Rangers. This is probably the biggest rival the Flyers have, as the two teams have faced each other many times during various playoff seasons. A close second big time rival is the New Jersey Devils.
Tickets to games against both these teams sell out quickly. Buy them in advance and save yourself a spot for great action and game play. Seating availabilities are abundant when you plan ahead. Ticket prices are also cheaper. Buy your Philadelphia Flyers tickets online today!
