Clayton Stoner gets 2-year extension with the Wild

The Minnesota Wild announced on Thursday that they have signed defenseman Clayton Stoner to a two-year contract extension worth $2.1 million.

Stoner, a third-round pick by Minnesota in the 2004 NHL Draft, started stepping up and showing that he had something to offer only during the 2010-2011 season where he played in 57 games and led the rest of the team with a plus-5 rating.

The 27-year old defenseman is part of the rebuilding defense corps which Minnesota hopes to improve in the next season with goaltender Niklas Backstrom in front.

Last season, Stoner caught the attention of various coaches with his physical style of play on the blue line. He made one goal and four assists playing in 51 games for the Wild in the last season. And while his season was injury-plagued, Stoner still led the team in plus-minus ratings thereby impressing coaches with his performance and earning the two-year extension on his contract.

The Minnesota Wild play in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference in the National Hockey League. Other members of this division include the Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche, Edmonton Oilers and the Vancouver Canucks.

As a relatively new team, the Minnesota Wild, which was founded in 2000, has had its moments of success. It was an expansion franchise that replaced the previously departed Minnesota North Stars which moved to Dallas in 1993.
